In the tradition of Valentine’s Day with our friends, Leanne and I would like to invite you to see a screening of Coraline. It will be the second year now that we’ve gathered a group of friends to partake in a Henry Selick stop motion animated film (after last year’s showing of The Nightmare Before Christmas.) If you have nothing else happening, book it off and plan to come out with us.
Oh, by the way, did you hear about the homemade promotion materials that were sent out? Those boxes and those sweet shoes? Pretty cool.
Update: Here’s a video from the advertising agency that put all the promos together. There were a lot of pieces to this!

So this last year I’ve been keeping track of the movies I’ve been watching. They’re a mix between those playing in the theatres, those I’ve received in the mail from Zip and those I’ve seen with friends. I don’t count films that I’ve caught a small piece of on TV, so these are all ones I’ve seen start to finish. Of the 73 on the list, 12 I’d seen at least once before this year.
Here’s a legend:

That’s, uh, no. Non-negotiable. How will we know you’re sad if you don’t say, “I am so sad”?
I’d, act it. But…
Naw, that’s stupid.
The trailer for the movie my roommates were writing last winter, filming this summer and now working to finish, is online. It’s called Jeff is Dead. Also have a look at other movie projects on the go at Forgotten Studios.

In line with many of the other reviews that have been popping up around the web (see Rushmore Academy for links to many of them) the well respected (personally and corporately) Roger Ebert gave The Darjeeling Limited a 3 and a half stars out of 4. Check out his review which does not present anything too unique but does have a couple nice insights into the film. This comment:
The casting of the three brothers is also a good fit. Their personalities jostle one another in a family sort of way; they’re replaying old tapes. Then they have unplanned adventures as a result of the obscure medications, and end up off the train and in the “real” India with all of that luggage. But Anderson doesn’t have them discover one another, which would be a cliche; instead, they burrow more deeply inside their essential natures. Then Francis springs a surprise: Their journey will end with a meeting with their mother (Anjelica Huston), who for some years has been a nun in an Indian religious order. Her appearance and behavior is our catalyst for understanding the brothers.
I had the same sense regarding the mother after reading the script. You have that ‘Aha’ moment where you see things come together at the end and see a deeper aspect of why they are who they are. Notice though, that the word there is ‘catalyst’ for understanding. Nothing is presented clear cut and definite. We slowly piece together our knowledge of the brothers, just as they seem to be piecing together their knowledge of themselves and each other.
In that way, it’s a great movie representation of a roadtrip. You go to find out who you are, who your traveling partners are and find that the experiences you’re placed in due to your surroundings change the way you see yourself. You don’t change that much, and home is still waiting for you, but you see things a bit differently. (A friend of mine would be in a better position right now to judge that assessment) That’s why I think this movie will really resonate with myself and my roommates. We’re like these brothers in so many ways.

Go to Dose to enter a contest for tickets to an advance screening of The Darjeeling Limited. Screening at the Westhills theatre in Calgary is on October 18. I guess we can presume the movie will be released here sometime after that date. November perhaps? Very exciting stuff. If anyone can get a hold of some of those advance tickets, let me know.
